Blues clip Eagles again, CeeBees blank Caps in home opener

The Bell Island Blues collected a second straight win over the Tapper's Northeast Eagles Saturday night at the Msgr. Bartlett Memorial Arena in Wabana, winning 3-0. The Blues kicked off the season with a 5-4 shootout win over the Eagles on Friday night in Torbay. On Saturday, the Eagles' Chris Sparkes opened the scoring with an unassisted tally in the first period, but the Blues responded with three second period goals in a six minute span for the win. Brandon Street potted the first, Brandon Burry made it 2-1 and Ryan Power added the insurance marker. Matt Jenkins picked up the win in net again for the Blues, turning aside 29 of 30 shots against. Mark Yetman had 37 saves in the loss. Meanwhile, at the new Danny Cleary Community Centre in Harbour Grace, the HGOE CeeBee Stars opened the 2016-17 campaign with a 4-0 victory over the visiting St. John's Green Sleeves Caps. Matthew Thomey led the way with two goals, Cody Batten had a goal and a helper and former pro defenseman Sam Roberts scored in his senior hockey debut. Daniel Sparkes finished the night with two helpers. AJ Whiffen earned the shutout in net with 41 saves. Kyle Downer stopped 29 of 33 shots against for the Caps. In Sunday's only game, the CeeBees travel to Mobile to face the Southern Shore Puglisevich Breakers at the Southern Shore Arena. Game time is 8 p.m.
